Let’s Talk About Respectability Politics… Part 2

Why is it a problem?

The biggest issue is that people should be treated like human beings no matter what. They should not have to alter their behavior in order to be taken seriously. If that was the case, our “President” has a lot of work to do. Some more issues include:

  • Do not blame someone’s oppression on them

It’s all very simple. Black Americans aren’t experiencing racism because of their behavior, they’re experiencing it because of white supremacy.

Do you feel like telling people to change to stop being oppressed it okay? If so, you’re drowning in privilege. Find a lifeguard.

  1. Just had a conversation yesterday about respectability politics with a group of people about the events at culture shock. She made the argument that black women shouldn’t be twerking in front of white people because it doesn’t look good. Really sucks that she believed that we have to behave a certain way so white people can respect us…Apparently we can’t just be respected as human beings. Great topic!

    1. Thanks so much for sharing that! It is really wild how we tend to police ourselves or within the community. I like to say do what you want as long as you’re not harming no one. A lot of the time we learn to police ourselves from our elders because of the situations they were in when they were our age. Sometimes people have to think about how that’s very harmful. Thanks again for sharing!
